What is the .ST File Extension?
.ST File Extension Description:
The file extension ST is associated with the popular gaming software ATARI ST which identifies the disk image made from an Atari floppy disk.
The file with the .st file extension is an exact copy of an Atari ST program or video game. It is a disk file that contains a replica of the application, and is comprised of data copied from an Atari cartridge. It is, however, a mere virtual image and can be opened only using emulation software such as Hatari or XSteem, which are Atari ST Emulators.
There are available imaging tools in the market that allows for the seamless creation of files with the .st file extension. These are available as Atari ST Disk imaging resources purposely developed as utility for making Atari ST images saved onto 3.5" floppy disks.
Because an Atari ST Program or video game may contain a large volume of data, imaging resources that creates the files with the .st file extension are capable of data compression or archiving. Hence, these files could sometimes take the form of a self-extracting file archive after the user completes imaging the disk drive. This function built in the imaging tool is usually optional.
Writing images to the file with the .st file extension is usually problem-free when the image occupies only 9 or 10 sectors per track, which is easily formatted. However, if data reaches 11 to 12 sectors per track, the user needs more powerful 32-bit machines to be able to make a seamless copy.
The Atari ST image files represented by the files with the .st file extension are expectedly large given that Atari has been converted as gaming software when it was acquired by Atari Games, Inc. way back in 1984. Formerly, Atari was a personal computer developed purposely for arcade gaming. Today, Atari is now owned by Tramel Technology Ltd, later on renamed as Atari Corporation.
The disk image file with the .st file extension can be opened in all platforms installed with Atari imaging resources. The applications for opening these files include Hatari, STeem and ARAnyM for Windows, NoSTalgia for Mac OS and STonX for Linux.Author: Atari Corporation
