What is the .SYD File Extension?
.SYD File Extension Description:
Files with the .syd file extension serves as backup files used by the QEMM utility. When running the System Edit and QEMM utility, important program files use up backup memory implemented on files with the .syd file extension.
The QEMM application or Quarterdeck Expanded Memory Manager is widely recognized memory manager used in both DOS and Windows. It works as an efficient memory manager designed by Quarterdeck purposely for the DOS operating system, although it also works efficiently under Windows.
During the process of memory management, QEMM automatically creates a backup file with the SYD file extension and executes backup memory. This is a built-in protective mechanism that QEMM implements to prevent data loss in case it encounters major errors during the process.
The QEMM program also creates the files with the .syd file extension whenever it runs its Optimizer utility which reboots the system repeatedly as a way of determining what memory can be liberated without causing internal problems in the PC. These files prove to be greatly useful whenever QEMM plays with memory addresses as they allow programmers to reset the PC to its original configuration.
QEMM allows programmers to access the EMS (Expanded Memory), the XMS (Extended Memory), and the UMA (Upper Memory Area). During the DOS days before advanced Windows applications took over the PC, QEMM became highly popular as it helped in freeing up a big amount of conventional memory. And because it has built-in backup utility performed by files with the .syd file extension, DOS users did not need to worry about problems during this process.
Quarterdeck soon developed the QEMM-386 program to support the more advanced Intel 80386 processors. This new program was capable of managing extended memory by converting it into an expanded memory and upper memory blocks. This new memory manager was similarly supported on earlier versions of Windows. Various programs, including Lotus 1-2-3 and many games also made full use of the EMS and XMS memory, with QEMM constantly implementing the SYD file extension for backup memory.Author: Quarterdeck Corporation
