What is the .TAL File Extension?
.TAL File Extension Description:
The Transaction Application Language (TAL) is the programming language designed to work with the Tandem computer system. It is conceptualized as a procedural, block- structured language that could compile statements into a sequence of instructions, in order to manipulate data on a register stack. Its source code is saved in files that end with the TAL file extension.
The language itself resembles Pascal or ALGOL. Similarly, the files with the .tal file extension also resemble Pascal's BEGIN AND END statements. TAL's semantics, however, are more like the C language, in which, it has no definite levels of nesting procedure and does not pass arguments by value. Its programming methods are more like the C pointers to overlays, structures, and string handling.
The file with the .tal file extension contains independent sets of keywords allowing the carat sign (") within the identifiers. It dies not possess a numeric type that is compatible with the unsigned long of Tandem C. In fact, only its FIXED (O) is compatible with C's long, long which is not FIXED (*O). The file's 16-bit INT is guaranteed to be compatible with C's short over all future Tandem hardware while its UNSIGNED <<n>> is not compatible with C's unsigned short. Regardless of the interface declarations in files with the .tal file extension, only their math operators can determine whether unsigned or signed operations can take place.
Each file with the .tal file extension is provided with one dimensional array, which can be indexed via declaring the minimum and maximum values. In order for data in an array to be shared, the files with the .tal file extension ought to be declared with zero as its initial index.
All STRUCTs in files with the .tal file extension, whether declared directly or via referral towards a so-called template, are actually "word-aligned objects". Thus, substructures within these files' Structures, declared through referral towards such template, are deemed "word-aligned objects" as well. In these cases, these STRUCTs can be mapped directly onto equivalent C structs.
The substructures of files with the .tal file extension are byte-aligned and they are are declared directly within their enclosing STRUCT. If substructures of this type directly follow a field that ends on an odd-byte boundary and the substructure contains a known "initial byte aligned field", where in, data sharing is deemed impossible without obliging the realignment of data within one language or the other.Author: Hewlett-Packard Company
