What is the .TOS File Extension?

.TOS File Extension Description:

The TOS file extension was originally employed by the operating system of the Atari ST computer. The succeeding 32-bit Atari computers utilized an updated version of TOS known as MultiTOS, which permitted multitasking. The most recent edition of TOS is FreeMiNT.

The main components of the original TOS were the desktop, the GEM Disk Operating System, Graphical Environment Manager, BIOS, Extended BIOS, and Low-Level High-Speed Graphics Calls.

The MiNT operating system, which also utilizes the TOS file extension, was the updated operating system for the Atari ST computer and its later versions. MiNT became the official substitute of kernel. Atari packaged it with its AES 4.0, which is a multitasking edition of GEM, and released it as MultiTOS. MiNT was further developed by a group of volunteers after Atari withdrew from the computer market and its current official label is FreeMiNT.

Files with the TOS file extension were found in the home computer Atari ST, which was powered by the 32-bit internal bus and 16-bit external bus of Motorola 68000. The Atari ST was comparable to other home computers that utilized the Motorola 68000 microprocessor, such as the Commodore Amiga and Apple Macintosh. It was the first popular computer with a completely bit-mapped color Graphical User Interface. An upgrade of the Atari ST was the Atari STE, which had enhanced the ST's color palette of 512 colors to 4096 colors. It is also implemented for multimedia hardware that included a two-channel sound processor.

The TOS file extension is also present in some Apple II files included in the Golden Orchard CD-ROM, which can be used in an Apple IIGS computer. The CD-ROM has several HFS partitions and 32 megabytes of a ProDOS bootable partition.
