What is the .TRIF File Extension?
.TRIF File Extension Description:
The file extension TRIF identifies bitmap images created using Tiled Raster Interchange Format. It is implemented as a CALS type II raster format used by various standards documents in the United States.
The Tiling Task Group of the National Institute of Standards and Technology originally designed the standard format for the TRIF file extension. It was Frankie Spielman who held the attribution and pioneered the standardization of the TRIF file extension as a standard format for military documents. Documents that are TRIF coded were largely adapted in military standards for large format tiled raster documents.
Raster graphics or bitmap images created as files with the .trif file extension are represented in binary format. They are large raster images that can be encoded right inside a CGM (computer graphics metafile) file. Thus, CGM users, particularly those in commercial aviation, use them as intelligent graphics files.
Files with the .trif file extension are created as two-dimensional grid tile raster images. This means that the tile or the set of pixels makes up a part of those bitmap images. What make them suitable for electronic transmission are the accessibility of their texts and graphics and the ability of their images to be stored consistently. The individual pixels of these files can also be manipulated for high-quality editing making digital processing of documents a lot easier.
The TRIF file extension uses the compression functionality of CALS. And because the United States government has approved CALS as a standard format, the file with the .trif file extension is CALS-compatible. The file also supports a variety of compression algorithms, such as JPEG, CMP, LZW, run-length, etc. The technology that the TRIF file extension offers makes it possible for high-quality compressed images to be implemented on standard documents.
Several enhancements of files with the .trif file extension were included in the CALS type 2 formats. They can be used to formulate an object-structure grammar as well as allow for electronic review written in graphics. They are also required when implementing hypermedia which are smart objects belonging to graphics databases.Author: Frankie Spielman
