What is the .TZ File Extension?
.TZ File Extension Description:
The file extension TZ is a compressed file archive. It is short for TAR.Z, wherein the TAR is derived from 'tape archive', and the Z is added since it is a compressed file to indicate its compression format. The original file in TAR consists of a type of archive bit stream. The TAR files were standardized initially by POSIX.1-1988, and then later by POSIX.1-2001.
A raw format was used for tape backup and other devices for backup purposes in sequential access. Presently, with the TZ file extension, it is now commonly used for collating file collections into a single large file. This is done for the purpose of archiving or distribution, at the same time preserving the information on the file system like dates, directory structures, and user or group permissions.
The Tar's linear roots are still seen in its capacity to work on streams of data, and with its partial extraction performance. Any Tar file when compressed produces a Tar compressed filename with a filename extension to indicate the compression type. Just like other UNIX utilities, these Tar files do not require a specific filename suffix to be recognized as a file in a compressed archive. Conventionally, it used to have filenames such as xxx.tar.z, xxx.gz or xxx.tar.bz2.
However, such filenames are unrecognizable in MS-DOS because of the 8.3 limits, therefore, the file extension TZ has been made, which is short for tar.Z. These older versions of filename extensions have almost disappeared. Nevertheless, they are still used in limited file systems, which still require their use for recognition of the compressed archive files.
The compressed files with the TZ file extensions are called tarball, and are commonly found in saved disk spaces. These tarball formats are combinations of tar archives with file-based schemes for compression, commonly GZIP, which is used for source and binary on UNIX or UNIX-like platforms distribution.Author: POSIX
