What is the .U3D File Extension?
.U3D File Extension Description:
The U3D file extension is commonly known as the Universal 3D, which is defined as a file format that it is compressed, and used for 3D data. The U3D file extension was defined during the special consortium called the 3D Industry Forum. It brought together all the big companies and organizations like Boeing, Intel, HP, Bentley Systems, Adobe, Right Hemisphere, and a lot more companies. Groups that joined in this consortium are those who focus on the promotion of 3D development and its use for various industries like time manufacturing, construction, and industrial plant design.
However, the U3D file extension file format was just standardized in August 2005 by the Ecma International. It was called then as the Ecma-363. The goal of doing this is to have a universal or standard format for three-dimensional data. This is also made to facilitate the data exchange between the different programs and different platforms. The created consortium also promoted the development of a library that was provided as an open source, which will surely help facilitating the easier adoption of the U3D file extension. Through the U3D file extension, different programs that are using 3D graphics have easier tasks on using same formatted files. Therefore, better products are created in relatively lesser time.
Moreover, the U3D file extension is supported by the famous PDF format. 3D Objects with this file format have the ability to be inserted into PDF documents. Thus, the Acrobat Reader can also visualize it. Also, the PDF files with the U3D file extension objects can be created using the Pdftex.
With the standardized 3D objects having the U3D file extension, computer-aided design programs were allowed to export the on-screen interactive experiences into the mainstream office applications that are known to support its specifications. This file extension also simplifies the transformation of complicated 3D data into simpler format that can be compressed, streamed, and viewed for high quality viewing experience.Author: Ecma International
