What is the .U8 File Extension?
.U8 File Extension Description:
The U8 file extension is used as the standard encoding format in most PC sound cards that could playback PCM audio. PCM stands for Pulse Code Modulation and is the standard form in the context of linear audio coding. It is the digital representation of the analog signal where its magnitude is regularly sampled at uniform intervals quantized to series to symbols in binary code. Most audio mixing and editing routines choose the PCM format.
The U8 file extension, which means unsigned 8-bit, is the most popular linear PCM among Mac and PC users. Linear PCM is an uncompressed audio format supported by practically any kind of hardware that stores samples in 8-bit bytes with amplitude range of 0 to 255. Instead of having an amplitude range of -127 to +127, all file samples of U8 are offset by 128. For instance, silence is normally quantized as 0, but by using U8, it is recorded as 128.
The first widely known available PC audio card that supported PCM was the original Creative Sound Blaster, which could only playback mono audio. This means that it contains the files with the .u8 file extension that uses the unsigned 8-bit linear PCM data. The original Sound Blaster was limited in the frequencies it could support, thus its digital to analog conversion had to be programmed before yielding the final playback frequency.
It is not enough to know that the PCM sample is 8 bits wide. It is also very important to know if the sample is signed or unsigned so as to understand the range. Once the sample is already signed, the actual sample range would be between -128 to 127 along with a center point of 0 and if the PCM type will be signed, the precise sign encoding will be always 2's complement. If the sample is unsigned, the sample range is from 0 to 255 with a center point of 128.Author: N/A
