What is the .UUE File Extension?

.UUE File Extension Description:

Uuencode, a small Win32 utility in the UNIX program that converts an arbitrary file to an encoding format based on the standard encoding algorithms using only 64 ASCII characters, uses The UUE file extension. Uuencode is also known as UNIX to UNIX encoding.

Uuencode converts files from binary to text format so they can be transmitted over the UUCP mail system. These converted files, which use the UUE file extension, are often used for e-mailing documents over the UUCP mail system. Since UUCP (Unix to Unix Copy) converts data between various character sets, Uuencode converts the same data to common characters.

The files with the .uue file extension, however, cannot be opened without being decoded. Thus, the Uudecode program reverses the actual effect of the Uuencode and converts them back to their original format, recreating the exact binary file as the original.

The file with the .uue file extension starts with a header line: begin <mode> <file> where <mode> is the file's UNIX to write/read/execute permissions. This is as "three octal digits", and <file> is the actual name that will be utilized when recreating the binary data. There are also lines in-between the trailer and the header encode data. In which, each would start with an assigned byte that indicates the data bytes' number which is encoded on that specific line and eventually ends up having a new line for the character.

All lines in a file with the .uue file extension encode 45 bytes of data. The encoded length's corresponding value is actually 'M'. This is the reason why most lines usually begin with the letter 'M'. If the data bytes counted is not three-divisible, either one or even two extra bytes of the "zero" are then appended. Thus, these would not be indicated in the counting which is usually at the last line's beginning portion.

Adding 32 encode the line count. In ASCII, the first thirty-two characters are unprintable and in controlled data transmission. They could then be deleted or modified by transmission. Hence, the subsequent ninety-five characters which are at the so-called code 32 or above are actually all printable. Even if the actual line count falls in the ranges 0-45, adding 32 converts it into a printable character. The ASCII code for 'M' is exactly 45+32. For a length line of zero, adding a 32 onto a 0 provides a direct space character. Thus, this character is reportedly also problematic on data transmission. This is why the code 96 or accent grave is used instead. Taking out 32 actually results to a value where in the lower 6 bits are regarded as 0.
