What is the .VDR File Extension?
.VDR File Extension Description:
VirtualDub is a video capture processing utility for Windows that provides fast streamlined linear operations. It is capable of processing files from batches to third party video filters. It mainly processes AVI files but it can read MPEG-1 files and handle sets of BMP images.
In addition to its extensive features, VirtualDub has a powerful frameserver that can send and receive frames to and from another program. These frames are stored in files with the .vdr file extension, which can be directly streamed to another application without going through an intermediate file.
To provide maximum compatibility, various clients are needed to be installed and can be used with the frameserver. This includes the auxsetup.exe application that installs the AVIFile client, which in return can be boosted into proxy mode by the aviproxy directory.
The proxy mode installs the AVIFile handler directly on top of the AVI slot while all AVI requests go through the handler first. The file with the .vdr file extension is taken by the AVIFile handler along with the standard Windows handlers like AU, WAV or AVI. The handler is only activated when a file with the .vdr file extension is detected.
VirtualDub always starts in frameserver mode before the client connects, initializes all the necessary settings, and then starts the Frame-Server from the File menu. The Frame-Server status window appears after saving a signpost with the VDR file extension for the regular AVIFile client or the AVI file extension for the AVIFile proxy mode. When you open the signpost in the client application, the message counts start rising in the status window and the first frame in the client appears.
When you start the frameserver, a Windows appears asking for the name of the frameserver but you can use the default name. Choose the name of the signpost that you want to save, ensuring the VDR file extension is included with the filename. A dialog box then appears displaying the statistics of the frameserver. Finally, the file with the .vdr file extension can be opened in your desired video application.Author: Avery Lee
