What is the .VIM File Extension?
.VIM File Extension Description:
The VIM file extension identifies help files and syntax files used by the VIM text editor. VIM (Vi IMproved) is an improved version of "VI" distributed with most UNIX systems and includes almost all its commands, which can be accessed through the keyboard.
VIM is simply built for a more efficient text editing, from composing email to editing configuration files. It has a graphical user interface though it only works in text mode meaning it does not do typesetting or laying out of the document. Its main function is for entering text and not for making it look good. It has a configurable menu and mouse support. It is often called the programmer's editor because of its integration with programming languages like Perl, Python and TCL.
The files with the .vim file extension are VIM's runtime files. These files are used as additional files when the program runs but they do not code that can be compiled and linked. There are more than 70 files with the .vim file extension on syntax, filetype plugins, compiler, color schemes, documentations, commands, indentations, and keymaps. Some of these files are specific to the use of VIM on each operating system.
Some examples of files with the .vim file extension are the commands .exrc.vim and .gvimrc.vim. The .exrc file is contained in the wordlist.vim which includes macros to centre a line, can count the number of words in a file, can insert and display the current time or date, and can play the name game. On the other hand, the .gvimrc file sets up menu commands coming from the gvim.commands.vim. This file includes each command in VIM such as keystroke.
Another file called .vim/<language>.vim sets up language specific commands and settings that are loaded by autocommands in .vimrc file. Each language file either maps or unmaps commands such as ;s (checks syntax), ;c (comment or uncomment a line), ;t (add a title box around it), and ;E (edits a specific language file).
There are also programs, which use the VIM file extension such as the VimternetExplorer.vim, which is a fully functional web browser in VIM, the add.vim that is a macro that adds arbitrary integers together, and the meta.vim, which is a self-printing macro.Author: Bram Moolenar
