What is the .VMC File Extension?
.VMC File Extension Description:
Microsoft Virtual PC is a visualization suite for Windows and an emulation suite for Mac OS X and PowerPC based systems. However, it can be used to run on nearly all operating systems available for the personal computers.
The Virtual PC application creates anywhere on your real hard disk a virtual machine that includes a virtual floppy drive, a virtual CD drive, and virtual display adapter. One or more virtual hard disks can be attached to the virtual machine.
Virtual PC stores its data in two files: the files with the .vmc file extension that saves the various settings for the virtual machine and the files with the .vhd file extension that stores the virtual hard disk's guest operating system, its data files and its applications. Both files are stored in the same directory.
Files with the .vmc file extension contain settings for the emulated hardware such as the display adapter. The virtual machine can think it has the NVidia graphics display regardless of what VGA card is really installed in the system. These files also include settings for the virtual floppy drive and the virtual CD drive. You can drag and drop the ISO image of a CD or a raw image of a floppy onto the virtual drives and the virtual machine behaves just as though you inserted a real CD or a real floppy disk in the real drives.
The files with the .vmc file extension identify the virtual machine's hardware and software configuration alongside which operating system it will run. They are automatically saved by default in the My Virtual Machines subfolder of the My Documents folder or they can be located anywhere on the host computer.
As soon as the operating system is indicated, the appropriate settings for the virtual machine are stored in the files with the .vmc file extension such as increasing the amount of RAM needed to improve its performance and be able to run more applications. These files can have other files associated with them if the state of a running virtual machine session is saved.
The files with the .vmc file extension can be moved or duplicated on other machines. This means they can be created on one computer and can be run on another computer. In doing so, they need to be added to the Virtual PC Console by running the virtual machine wizard.Author: Microsoft Corporation
