What is the .VMS File Extension?
.VMS File Extension Description:
In Japan, the Visual Memory System (VMS) is a memory card peripheral for the Sega Dreamcast. In North America and in other countries, it is called VMU (Virtual Memory Unit). Its main function is to serve as a removable storage device but it can also act as secondary display during the normal game play and can serve as a handheld game console using additional software.
By default, the Sega Dreamcast contains several mini-game titles that could be downloaded onto a VMS or VMU. However, you can write your own game using an Assembler and an Emulator. The Assembler is the program that makes the game file out of the source listing, whereas the Emulator is the program that runs the game file on a standard computer.
After compilation, the output file ends with the VMS file extension, which is the actual file, used with the Emulator. This file usually comes in the form of ROM. ROM stands for Read Only memory but in the world of emulation, a ROM is in effect the game itself.
All files with the .vms file extension contain a standard header used by file managers in the Virtual Memory System and in Dreamcast boot ROM to display information about the file. When used with data files, the header is stored at the beginning of the file but when used with game files, the header starts in the second block. The header offset field in the VMS directory contains 1 for games files and 0 for data files.
The header of the file with the .vms file extension typically contains 16 bytes of text indicating the description of the file shown in the VMS file menu, 32 bytes of text describing the file shown in the Dreamcast boot ROM file manager, and 16 bytes of string identifying the application that created the file. Immediately after are integers with 2 bytes each for the number of icons, icon animation speed, type of graphic eyecatch, and CRC for ignored game files.
Following Offset $46 is 4 bytes of integers, which indicates the number of bytes of the actual file data. Next is 20 bytes of reserved data filled with zeros and 32 bytes of integers for the icon palette and 512*n bytes of Nybbles indicating icon bitmaps. The header ends with the graphic eyecatch palette and bitmap.Author: Sega Corporation
