What is the .VOC File Extension?

.VOC File Extension Description:

The VOC file extension is an audio file format for Creative Voice specifically created for Sound Blaster cards and has been optimized for IBM compatible computers. This file extension was basically limited to an unsigned ADPCM and 8-bit PCM data but was later expanded to include 16 bit formats.

Files with the .voc file extension contain the header and the chunk. The header supplies the information of the audio samples while the chunk contains the binary data that represents the sound samples. Additional chunks with non-audio data are sometimes added after the sound sample chunk. There are times that the audio sample data is segmented into sub-blocks added with bits of silence. This means that files with the .voc file extension are capable of supporting a variety of sample formats that can be of variable length and can be compressed to reduce their sizes.

The header starts with 0x00-0x13h bytes containing the file description that reads "Create Voice File". The start of the data block is at 0x14-0x15 that defines the size of the header, which is set to 0x1A. At 0x16 bytes is the File Version in which the first byte is the major version and the second byte is the minor version. The identification code comes last at 0x18-0x19, which verifies that what you are reading is a real file with the .voc file extension. It is the assigned compliment of the 16 as well as 17h with 1234h versions.

The data block is composed of sub-blocks allowing the user to store more than one sound in one file with the .voc file extension. Each data block starts with the same 4 bytes in which the block type is 1 byte and the block length is 3 bytes.

A file with the .voc file extension contains the following functions:

* void SB16::to Unload_Sound(unsigned char *sound_ptr)

* void SB16::to Load_Sounds()

* void SB16::to Load_Sound(char *filename,int placenumber) - opens the file, reads its header, then goes into a loop where it processes subblocks. It only recognizes blocks of type 0, 1 and 9.

* Int SB16:: to BlockTypeNine (FILE *stream,int index) - this one really only needs the fread calls. It provides a lot more information than block number

* int SB16::to BlockTypeOne(FILE *stream,int index) - The only essential parts of this function are the fread calls in which the data can be read, have the sampling rate and data pack fields calculated, as well as the length of the data block.

* Int SB16::to ReadVocHeader(FILE *stream) - reads the main header of the file with the .voc file extension and determines if it is authentic or not.

The VOC file extension is also utilized for instrument sounds, audio clips, as well as sound effects which are collectively regarded as "voices". Files with the .voc file extension can be played back on Winamp and can be converted to MP3 so they can be played on iPod or MP3 player.
