What is the .W3U File Extension?
.W3U File Extension Description:
The W3U file extension identifies the unit data files used in Warcraft III. It is one of the file extensions used by the Object Editor when creating meta data files in Warcraft's character map. The other metadata file extensions, which contain all the edited data of your character map, are the W3T, W3B, W3D, W3A, W3H, and W3Q file extensions. All the Meta data files are stored into one single file with the .w3o file extension where only the edited information of the map is saved.
The file with the .w3u file extension, also known as the custom unit file, contains the edited data of all the modified units and structures of the map. It contains an initial and comes in two tables - the first being the original units table and the second being the user-created units table or those created by the map designer.
Each file with the .w3u file extension typically contains the header and the data. The header begins with the integer 1 representing the file's version followed by the x bytes for the original units table and the y bytes for the user-created units table. Following are the data that contains the table definition, unit definition structure, modification structure, and variable types.
The data's table definition starts with the integer 0 which specifies the number of units in the table and is also the number of the following units. The 0 value cannot be omitted even if there are no changes in the original table. Next are the unit definition structure, which contains 4 characters for the original unit ID, another 4 characters for the new unit ID, and the integer m for the number of modifications for the unit.
The modification structure contained in the file with the .w3u file extension has 4 characters for its modification ID code, the integer for its variable type, and another integer, usually 0, as the end of the unit definition. This file has 21 variable types such as 0=int, 1=real, 2=unreal, 3=string, 4=bool, 5=char, 6=unitList, 7=itemList, 8=regenType, 9=attackType, 10=weaponType, 11=targetType, 12=moveType, 13=defenseType, 14=pathingTexture, 15=upgradeList, 16=stringList, 17=abilityList, 18=heroAbilityList, 19=missileArt, 20=attributeType, and 21=attackBits.Author: Blizzard Entertainment
