What is the .WAS File Extension?
.WAS File Extension Description:
The ProComm Plus program contains tools, which provide users with multiple communication functions. ProComm can provide an electronic fax service, remote control capabilities, connect to the Internet, and emulate other terminals. ProComm Plus uses a specific scripting language to edit and control the program.
The program was developed by Datastorm Technologies, Inc. The program was originally developed for DOS computers, to allow them to connect to other computers by using telephone lines. Students at the University of Missouri originally developed ProComm Plus under the name PIL Software Systems. The program was then purchased by Datastorm Technologies, Inc. and renamed as ProComm Plus. The software was originally distributed through Internet Bulletin Board Systems.
A version of the program was later released for Windows. ProComm Plus for Windows included a primitive version of the web browser. The software also included support for the transfer of high-resolution images by using the RIP graphic terminal language.
Datastorm was bought by Quarterdeck, which was in turn bought by the Symantec Corporation. Symantec supported the program for a while. Currently, support, distribution and development for the program ended.
The WAS file extension is used by files which hold source code files. Source code files with the file extension .was are used to create processes for the DOS version of the program. Some support for the scripting language is included in the Windows version of the program.
Files with the .was file extension contain scripting language called Aspect. These files are already included in the program when it is installed. Files with the WAS file extension contain processes that can be used when the user wants to create tasks or modify the program. The user can call files with the file extension .was when they want to create additional processes for the program.
ProComm Plus was used mainly as a communication program in the time prior to the rise of the Internet. Computers at that time connected to each other using phone lines instead of connecting to an actual network. The program can also be used to host a small bulletin board system aside from receiving and sending faxes as well as connecting to other communication services.Author: University of Missouri students
