What is the .WG2 File Extension?
.WG2 File Extension Description:
The WG2 file extension belongs to the application Lotus 1-2-3 Worksheet from IBM Corporation.
The file extension WG2 represents worksheet files created on Lotus 1-2-3 on the OS/2 platform. It is a spin-off of the WG1 file extension, which is the graphic display of Lotus 1-2-3 for OS/2. The IBM Corporation developed the WG file extension specifically for its operating system/2 platform. This gives IBM exclusivity to the WG2 file extension as a worksheet output of Lotus 1-2-3. The operating system/2, where files with the .wg2 file extension can be opened, was considered a powerful platform that can support multiple applications. This was, of course, before the advent of Windows.
The software Lotus 1-2-3 had been for a time a popular program used for calculating and analyzing numerical data. It also functions as database management software as it is capable of sorting and extracting data, which the user can manage. One of its selling points is that it gives the user the ability to illustrate analysis of data using graphics; the resulting file is a file with the .wg2 file extension.
Before the software Excel outlasted Lotus 1-2-3, the WG2 file extension predominated in spreadsheet requirements among business offices and organizations. Lotus 1-2-3 was the pioneer in spreadsheet integration. The files with the .wg2 file extension could also contain any sorted data within a defined rectangular area. It can contain text that can be justified, which makes it similar to the functionality of an ordinary word processor.
Lotus 1-2-3 was designed to be user-friendly, as underscored by its easy access help key, which is the F1 key. Its pop-up menus are keyboard driven and there are one-key commands that allow users to run the application faster. Several macros and powerful add-ins were also integrated to the software, resulting in a trend among outside vendors to sell add-ins and macro packages to loyal users of Lotus 1-2-3.
In WG2 file extension, macros with syntax and commands were introduced, as well as string variable instances. In later versions of Lotus 1-2-3, multiple worksheets written in C made the WG2 file extension.Author: IBM Corporation
