What is the .WLK File Extension?
.WLK File Extension Description:
The file extension WLK is the proprietary file format used by the Davis Instruments Weather Station for their binary weather data. These instruments are the first in their range to use frequency hopping spread spectrum radio technology that can transmit and receive data up to 300m lines of sight. Additionally, they can provide highs and lows for virtually all weather variables for the past days, months, even years.
In order to archive the data stored in the Davis Instruments, the WeatherLink application was designed. WeatherLink was written to store, read, insert, view, update, analyze, export, print, and delete weather records. Its main function is to assist the data logger until the data are transferred to your computer. The data logger logs and stores the files with the .wlk file extension which when downloaded to your computer can be used for graphing, charting, and analysis of these files.
The data logger does not require a constant connection with your computer to continue it's logging and storing functions. It needs to be connected to the computer only when the files with the .wlk file extension are being downloaded or when the computer is actively using these files from the data logger. However, WeatherLink's bulletin, summary, or other real-time window displays are accessible only if the data logger is attached to the computer.
Data files from the earlier versions of WeatherLink do not have a fixed file extension. They only begin with the text WDAT1.0 but with the release of WeatherLink version 5.2, these data can be converted to files with the .wlk file extension.
Files with the .wlk file extension contain records that can be optionally stored in a relational database as MySQL or PostgreSQL. These files can include all the data found on the Davis weather stations such as temperature, rainfall, humidity, barometric pressure, wind speed, wind direction, solar radiation, UV sensors, etc. They can also include archives worth of 120 days, 60, 30, 15, even 1 day, depending upon the storage interval.Author: Davis Instruments
