What is the .WMV File Extension?
.WMV File Extension Description:
Microsoft Corporation published the WMV file extension as the compressed video file format of the multimedia software Windows Media. The WMV file extension is encapsulated in and describes the Advanced Systems Format (ASF), a container format designed for streaming media.
The WMV file format's main codec, WMV 9, was designed for applications engaged in Internet streaming. Later, Microsoft developed newer codecs for the WMV file format that cater to specialized contents. These specialized functions are dubbed as WMV Image and WMV Screen. The audio codec conjoined with the WMV file format normally comes from the Windows Media Audio format.
The codec WMV 9 carries the most important features contained in the WMV file format, namely, non-square pixels, frame interpolation, and interlaced video, making WMV files one of the clearest among video files. The WMV 9 codec employs high resolutions ranging from 720 to 1080 pixels for WMV files, thus targeting video output of high-definition content. Additionally, WMV 9, when activated, runs with a video resolution and bit rate exceeding 300,000 pixels at 1 megabyte per second.
The first specialized codec for the WMV file extension, the WMV Screen, serves as a screencast codec capturing live content. Moreover, it also has the ability to convert video from alike external programs into WMV files. This codec also has the ability to alternate between lossless and lossy encoding in order to improve compression efficiency, but this ability depends on the complexity of the source material.
The second specialized codec employed by the WMV file format is the WMV Image, a slideshow codec that applies transition, panning, and timing effects to playbacked images. For immobile images, the WMV Image reaches a higher image quality even when matched with high compression ratios compared to WMV 9 and WMV Screen.
The file extension WMV is contained by the container format ASF, but is also included in the Matroska or AVI container format by using the WMV's codec implementation in its Video Compression manager, or with the use of the VirtualDub encoder.Author: Microsoft Corporation
