What is the .WS File Extension?
.WS File Extension Description:
The Windows Script Host (WSH) is an ActiveX Scripting host that acts as a host environment for the execution of scripts using one or more ActiveX scripting engines or languages. With WSH, the host is the Windows operating system itself making it suitable for system scripting tasks.
The new Windows Scripting Host 2.0 introduced a new file format based on the Extensible Markup Language (XML) schema using the WS file extension. The use of XML defines the files with the .ws file extension according to purpose rather than presentation allowing a variety of applications to use the files in ways that promote different applications reuse and extensibility.
Files with the .ws file extension are not just simple ASCII files that contain ActiveX-compliant scripting language code. These files are XML applications specially structured by Microsoft to provide a powerful and improved scripting framework.
A basic file with the .ws file extension contains a sequence of XML elements that constitutes an opening tag, the body of the element, and the closing tag. The opening tag begins with a left angle bracket (<) followed by a lowercase name, an attribute list, and ends with a right angle bracket (>). The closing tag always contains the same element name, prefixed with a slash character (/).
The element names of files with the .ws file extension are case sensitive so that two names with the same word, one in lower case and one in uppercase, are two distinct elements. Each element contains any number of attributes that are placed in the opening tag following the element name, whereas each attribute contains an attribute name and an attribute value, which has to be always enclosed in double quotes ("").
Files with the .ws file extension are always composed of one or more job elements. Each job element consists of one or more script elements and each script element contains a part of the script code in a specific language. Simply put, the file with the .ws file extension basically contains a single job and a script element where the script code itself is enclosed in the script element. The script language contained within the script element body is specified using the language attribute. The language attribute allows the WSH to pass the script to the correct ActiveX Scripting engine for execution.Author: Microsoft Corporation
