What is the .XBM File Extension?

.XBM File Extension Description:

The .xbm file format was employed first by the academic sector, particularly by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, before it was released for commercial use. The file extension .xbm is classified as an image file format. Oftentimes, this library can be found within computers implementing low graphical resolution.

Files of the .xbm format have two or four statements in place for the common header of the image file format. Two of the statements specify the pixel dimensions, while the other two specify the bitmap hotspot position. Hotspots are essential within bitmap images to point out the location of the cursor pointer. The performance of a file of the .xbm format also relies on the hotspots as the point of reference within the bitmapped image.

The .xbm file extension is also a format for an ASCII monochrome text image, often used for containing icon and cursor bitmaps for the graphical user interface of its perpetrating application. Files of this format commonly occur in headers and are made up of a string of constant unsigned array of characters bearing data in monochrome pixels. The .xbm file extension implements per header one array for every image.

A file of this format has an unlimited maximum image size and allows multiple images for every file. Two major operating systems have only been known to be capable of recognizing and putting into operation files of the .xbm format.

Though the .xbm file extension is limited to two operating systems, several Web browsers support this image file format. Presently, the .xbm file extension no longer exists within the default Web browser for Windows, but is still in utilities widely used in Internet browsers.
