What is the .XMF File Extension?
.XMF File Extension Description:
The XMF file extension belongs to the family of music-related file format. XMF means eXtensible Music Format, a new specification for the deliverance of music and audio content in wireless and web-based applications. It contains one or more file formats already in use worldwide such as MIDI (Musical Instrument Digital Interface), SMF (Standard MIDI Files), GM (General MIDI), and DLS (Down Loadable Samples).
Using pre-produced sound elements, the XMF file extension specification creates an open standard file format for music and sound generation and collects in a single file every bit of resource required to render a type of musical piece in a variety of playback devices, an interactive type of webpage soundtrack, as well as other pieces of musical media. The SMF defines what notes are played, the GM defines standard sets of instruments to play those notes defined by SMF, and the DLS define the means to create additional instruments.
Unlike other compressed audio formats, files with the .xmf file extension can reference instrument data contained inside a computer, PDA, mobile phone, or other sound generator that makes them smaller and faster to download. Furthermore, these files store music in parts and sections rather than as one linear performance. They are also delivered in a format that can be arranged and edited during playback in order to create many hours of music.
The XMF file extension has two parts:
* XMF Meta-File Format - used by all files with the .xmf file extension. It has no maximum file size, thus it can store very large collections due to its use of the VLQ (variable length quality)
* XMF File Types (XMF Type 0, XMF Type 1) - standard MIDI files that use both the standard MIDI instruments provided by the player. Both types are identical except that in Type 0, the MIDI file may be streamed.
Structurally, the XMF Meta-File consists of hierarchically grouped nodes just like an internal file system with folders that are called containers and files that are called resources. A node can be either a container or a resource. This means that the resource node can actually pertain to another internal node, or even an external one in cases like pointing to a direct URL.Author: MIDI Manufacturers Association
