What is the .XML File Extension?
.XML File Extension Description:
The XML file extension is described as Extensible Markup Language (XML), created by the World Wide Web (W3) Consortium as a general purpose specification for creating documents to share data across different systems - usually via the Internet.
The markup language used in XML documents are structured to facilitate the sharing of data by allowing users to define their own elements and tags, unlike those the fixed tags used in HTML (Hypertext Markup Language).
The format of the file in an .xml extension is derived from the text formatting of SGML (ISO 8879). At first, the language was developed for large scale electronic data publishing for the exchange of information across the Web. It uses data files that utilize tags to define objects and its attributes, like those in HTML, but also using basic tags to define each object in a structured format.
Considering that many systems have built-in support for .xml documents, a simple text editor like Notepad (for Windows), can be used to create such document without resorting to complicated applications.
Since these .xml formats are text based, this makes it easier for various applications to open, retrieve, modify, and store data from them. Also, considering the content, the file size of each document is relatively small as compared to other data file; which is quite convenient in sharing them to other systems over the Internet.
In constructing a file with .xml format, 2 basic conditions must be met: 1) the tags must be well-formed and 2) validity of the elements inside the document.
For a .xml document to be well-formed, each tag must have its corresponding closing tag (e.g. </book>), or the application will not be able to correctly read its designated content. Second, the validity of the XML document must follow the original schema. As such, each element and tags must be carefully defined on its designated header before it can be considered as valid.Author: W3 (,World Wide Web), Consortium
