What is the .XNN File Extension?
.XNN File Extension Description:
Databases are used to contain several kinds of information in one place. Information from several sources and in different formats can be stored, managed and sorted by database systems and programs. Paradox is one program that acts as a relational database management system.
Richard Schwartz and Robert Shostak developed paradox. The two later formed a company called Ansa Software that handled development and distribution of the application. Borland later acquired the company and its product line. The program is used to manage and create databases.
The very first version of the program was developed for DOS computers. Borland continued development on the application and released Borland Paradox for Windows. The Corel Corporation later acquired the rights to the software.
The DOS version of the program was competitive with other database programs in the late 1980s to the early 1990s. The program featured a strong artificial intelligence engine that allowed users to search the database thoroughly. The program came with its own programming language called Paradox Application Language (PAL). PAL was easy to use for those who had no prior programming experience. It allowed processes to be created from striking specific keys on the keyboard, a process similar to recording macros. The program's interface used text menus and windows, which was rare at a time when command line interfaces were more common.
One feature of paradox allowed it to use the system's resources faster and better than other database programs of its time. This was its ability to manage the extended and expanded memory of the system by caching data tables and constantly creating indexes. Files with the Xnn file extension contain indexes created by the program.
Indexes with the file extension Xnn are used to link to information, references and processes used by the database. When users want to access a process or data stored in the database, it checks indexes with the Xnn file extension to obtain a link. This process allows the user to navigate to certain parts of the database and the program easily. Files with the Xnn file extension actually store secondary indexes for the program. The letters "nn" in the file extension Xnn are placeholders for numbers, which indicate when the index was created.Author: Richard Schwartz and Robert Shostak
