What is the .XTP File Extension?
.XTP File Extension Description:
XTree uses Files in the .xtp file extension. XTree was developed to manage files, and was also originally utilized for DOS (disk operating system). Executive Systems first released it on April 1, 1985, and it became very popular. The user interface provided was purely of text characters, but had some form of graphical elements included. The later version of XTree, XTreeGold, was made available in 1989 and drop down menus were integrated.
Files under the .xtp file extension, when used with XTree's interface filled in the gap for its users, and offered a file manager with some graphical extent. Even with a slight advantage, XTree provided speed and features that other file managers were not able to integrate onto their software. A noteworthy example is the support for compressing files with the ZIP utility, and an undelete feature.
The XTree program, which uses the XTP file extension, also benefited from a very small memory footprint. This was very essential back then, when only 640kb of system memory was available for most programs to run in.
Upon the introduction of the Windows operating system, XTree suffered a decline in popularity. Apart from the fact that it was free, file managers bundled with Windows operating systems showed similarity in features to that of XTree, and although it was not as efficient (slower), it was able to provide keyboard shortcuts along with a fully graphical interface, which was easier for users.
During its earlier years, the XTP file extension had features like listing files in a tree-like fashion (thus the name "XTree"), showing files and subdirectories within folders, listing files on the entire hard drive, and looking at files' contents in a text or hexadecimal form, while disregarding the files extensions, which was not available on the windows platform even all the way up to the latest releases (Windows Vista still cannot do this). All of these were already available with the XTP file extension.Author: This was originally from Executive Systems and later acquired by Central Point Software and then by Symantec.
